A Hitchhiking Pedestrian Causes Crash on U.S. 67

A hitchhiking pedestrian was taken to Shannon Hospital this morning after he was struck by a vehicle in the 3100 block of North U.S. Highway 67, said Officer Ed Hunger, traffic investigator with the San Angelo Police Department.

Hunger said at approximately 6:45 a.m. this morning, the Abilene/Bronte turnoff on U.S. 67 was closed down after a vehicle struck the pedestrian who was walking in the lane of traffic. The driver told SAPD officials the man had his arm out and was possibly hitchhiking. He was in the right lane for northbound traffic, and stood in the center of the lane. The driver saw him at the last minute, swerved to the left, and the mirror hit the man, knocking him down. The man did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

Hunger said the pedestrian, in this case, was cited for failing to yield to traffic. The investigator added that an officer smelled alcohol on the man’s breath, but his level of alcohol intake was unknown. Additionally, because he was being uncooperative with police, Hunger did not know the man’s name; however, he is currently being treated at Shannon Hospital.
