Angelo State University, in collaboration with San Angelo Independent School District, was awarded the Quest for Quality Award in Exemplary Field-Based Instructional Practice. Participants in the Quest for Quality Project were recognized at Tuesday’s School Board Meeting.
“This is a state-wide recognized award,” Sandra Maxedon, an education professor at ASU, said at the meeting.
The purpose of the Quest for Quality Award is to recognize exemplary quality in university-based teacher preparation in Texas. Only four other universities were awarded in the same category.
ASU collaborated with the Rio Vista Early Head Start program in order to “increase the quality of their teachers and, for ASU, enhance candidates' involvement with young children.”
“Immediately we knew we were going to make a connection,” Maxedon said of the initial meetings ASU had with SAISD’s Head Start administration.
The ASU education students involved with the project were able to spend 15 clock hours working with children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 5-years-old. This allowed the students to grow in understanding of a younger age group.
Due to the success of the program, ASU and SAISD plan to implement it into the other two Head Start locations this coming year.
