Large Gas Leak in Southwest San Angelo

A large gas line break in the 2700 block of Oak Hills Trail in southwest San Angelo has the fire department standing by as Atmos Energy crews are working on the line. According to Shelley Burnett spokeswoman for Atmos Energy, gas line breaks are fairly routine. This one happens to be larger than most.

“The first thing we do is insure the safety of everyone, including our workers, before working on these breaks. That’s why the fire department is standing by,” she said. “The fire department in San Angelo is fabulous to work with.”

The leak was caused by an accidental line cut by a fence construction company, Burnett said. “It was completely accidental,” she said.

Gas crews and the fire department responded just before 6:30 p.m. Monday evening. The foreman said that they have found the leak and after isolating it, the fix will go in. Burnett said the line will be fixed as quickly as possible.

This gas leak was discovered by someone calling 9-1-1 to report the odor. Burnett said she applauds these reports. If you smell gas, call 9-1-1 or the Atmos Energy hotline, toll free at 866-322-8667.

Burnett did not have immediate information if service was interrupted but added, ”We’ll have this fixed fairly quickly.”
