LAS VEGAS, NV — San Angelo cowboy Joel Harris continued his strong run at the National Finals Rodeo by winning Round 6 of tie-down roping on Tuesday night.
Harris roped his calf in 6.8 seconds, which earned him $36,668. Heading into the night, he had already posted two runner-up finishes and a sixth-place showing.
Harris began this year’s NFR in 14th place in the 15-man field, but he has vaulted up the leaderboard into fourth place in the overall standings with $251,396.11 in season earnings.
He has earned nearly $95,000 in less than a week in Las Vegas.
San Angelo’s other two cowboys in the event weren’t able to finish in the money Tuesday. Dylan Hancock was 11th in 9.1 seconds, while Ty Harris didn’t record a time.
Hancock dropped one spot to sixth in the overall standings with $226,658.01, while Ty Harris also fell one spot to 12th with $176,767.47.
Joel Harris clipped Louisiana cowboys Zack Jongbloed by 0.2 seconds and Mount Pleasant’s Kincade Henry by 0.3 seconds to claim Tuesday’s win.
The top two men in the overall standings — Shad Mayfield of Clovis, New Mexico and Riley Webb of Denton — tied for fifth place in 7.4 seconds.
Mayfield is still hanging onto a narrow lead of $388,930.78, ahead of Webb’s $382,849.42.
Round 7 of the 10-round NFR will continue Wednesday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
