SAN ANGELO, TX — The rematch is set between the No. 2-ranked Water Valley Wildcats and the No. 6 Robert Lee Steers, and the battleground will be at San Angelo Stadium.
Rocky Balboa vs. Apollo Creed. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader. Batman vs. Superman.
Those fights pale in comparison to Water Valley vs. Robert Lee, the greatest gladiator match in Concho Valley football. In the area round, the Wildcats beat Newcastle, 64-29, and the Steers beat Valley, 63-6.
All season long, the Concho Valley has been home to two of the premier six-man programs in the state between Water Valley and Robert Lee. Not only are these two programs respected across West Texas, they represent the same district.
The first matchup was during the regular season, and the Wildcats took home the win, 67-30, in a game that was delayed by heavy rain. Both teams had only one other game that wasn't ended early by the 45-point mercy rule.
Last year, Water Valley had a much-closer 62-50 win over Robert Lee.
For both teams, it isn’t just one player. If Marvel and DC would do a crossover event, it would be The Avengers vs. the Justice League. Water Valley has Boston Wiese, Landon and Branson Lacy, Rett Dickison Hayden Kolster and Cade Manley to name a few, while Robert Lee has Brenner Sherwood, Nate Samaniego, Wyatt Bosworth, Justice Immel, and Josh Garcez.
Combined, Robert Lee and Water Valley have scored 1,405 points and have given up 330.
You couldn’t write an article without bringing up the coaches. Water Valley’s Trey Sisco brings a ton of experience and knowledge to the field, winning a state championship with Sterling City in 2020.
On the other sideline, Lee McCown built up the Steers into what they are now. Before this season, Robert Lee hadn't won a playoff game since 2012.
The Steers are now in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1984. Water Valley reached the state semifinals last year for the first time ever.
Fans won’t have to travel far as the game is right here in town at San Angelo Stadium. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28.
Other notable six-man playoff games this week are:
- Richland Springs vs. Oglesby – 3 p.m. Saturday in Dublin
- Gordon vs. May – 6 p.m. Friday in Clyde
- Rankin vs. Whiteface – 6 p.m. Friday in Lamesa
