OZONA, TX — Ozona High School’s Christian Villarreal has added one more award to his unforgettable senior season by being named the McDonald’s Player of the Week by High School Sports Magazine.
Villarreal was honored after completing the regular season with 3,505 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns in 10 games.
He had 236 yards and five TDs last week in a 68-0 win over Christoval. It was actually his second-lowest total of the year during a season in which he’s averaging 350.5 yards per game.
The win capped a perfect regular season for Ozona, which is the first time the Lions have accomplished that feat in 23 years.
Villarreal is 540 yards away from the state’s single-season rushing record of 4,045 yards, which was set back in 1953 by Sugar Land’s Kenneth Hall in 12 games.
Villarreal and Ozona have only one guaranteed game left as the Lions open the playoffs this week. They’ll take on Anson (7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Big Spring.
Villarreal has racked up numerous honors this season, including Player of the Week awards from San Angelo LIVE! and Ford, along with a feature by Texas Football.
