WASHINGTON — After nearly 40 years in Congress, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is finally stepping down.
The 85-year-old Democrat from California announced Thursday morning she would not be seeking re-election. She has served in the House of Representatives since 1987.
President Donald Trump celebrated Pelosi's announcement in comments to Fox News, saying "The retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America."
Trump called her "evil," "corrupt," and "only focused on bad things for our country."
Pelosi famously tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech while sitting behind him as he spoke in 2020. Soon after, Trump gave her the nickname, “Crazy Nancy.”
For many, Pelosi came to represent everything wrong with American politics. Not only did she serve in Congress for 38 years, but she has a reported net worth of over $200 million — despite a salary of $174,000 per year.
Her success in the stock market became so prolific that a “Pelosi Tracker” app was created, and hundreds of thousands of Americans made a profit by simply making the same stock trades.
Remarkably, she was never charged with any crimes related to insider trading.
Pelosi also fundraised more than $1 billion over her career for the Democratic party.
In 2007, she made history by becoming the first woman to be elected as Speaker of the House.
