Dog Injured After Being Dragged by Vehicle

SAN ANGELO, TX — A dog was injured Thursday after being dragged by a rope attached to a vehicle near the San Angelo animal shelter, according to Concho Valley PAWS.

The organization said the incident occurred moments after a man attempted to surrender the animal but was turned away because he was not a city resident.

PAWS reported that staff became concerned about the man’s behavior during the interaction and notified San Angelo police. After the man left the shelter, witnesses saw the dog being dragged by his vehicle. Officers and animal control responded, and PAWS sent staff to assist.

Because animal control cannot accept pets originating from outside San Angelo city limits and the man was not being taken into custody at the scene, PAWS said it asked officers to release the dog to its care. Officers agreed, and the dog was transferred to PAWS.

PAWS said the dog, now named Stella, suffered bloody and damaged paw pads, broken nails and road rash. Her injuries did not appear life-threatening, according to the organization. PAWS stated Stella likely survived because she remained on her feet while being dragged.

PAWS said it did not have an open kennel available and is seeking a foster home for Stella as she recovers. The incident remains under investigation, and it was not immediately clear whether the man will face animal-cruelty charges.
