Día de los Muertos Celebration Returns to San Angelo Saturday

SAN ANGELO, TX — The sixth annual Día de los Muertos celebration will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, at Bart DeWitt Park, offering a full day of cultural performances, family activities, and a riverfront procession honoring loved ones who have passed.

The free community event, hosted by the San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 325 S. Oakes St., with activities extending to the Bosque at 330 S. Irving St.

Organizers said this year’s festival will include Lucha Libre wrestling, a Catrina and Catrín costume contest, live mariachi and dance performances from local schools and groups, a kids craft area, and multiple piñata hours. A procession along the river is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

There will be 17 food vendors, 30 craft vendors, and six alcohol and beverage vendors. Lawn chairs are encouraged for those planning to watch performances throughout the day.

A community altar and ofrenda will be available for visitors to place photos or mementos of loved ones. Organizers requested that items placed on the altar not include glass. Note cards decorated with butterflies will be available for personal messages.

A fashion show featuring traditional Mexican attire from Leo’s Imports, youth performances from Bradford Elementary and the Lake View Chiefettes, and appearances by mariachi groups are also planned.

Organizers stated that admission, performances, children’s activities, and participation in the altar are free, thanks to community sponsors.

“The biggest piece of success whenever you put on the event is you guys, the people," organizer Luis Urteaga said. "This is a call to action. We want you to show up."
