AUSTIN, TX — Texas could soon gain its largest new state park in decades if the state finalizes a plan to purchase a 54,000-acre ranch in the Hill Country using the state’s new $1 billion Centennial Parks Conservation Fund.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working to acquire Silver Lake Ranch, located about 150 miles west of San Antonio between Rocksprings and Uvalde in Kinney and Edwards counties. The scenic property, owned by the Moody family of Galveston, features varied terrain, abundant wildlife and a spring-fed lake.
If approved, the purchase would mark the first use of the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, which was created by the Texas Legislature and approved by voters in 2023 to expand public access to natural lands.
“This is a milestone for all Texans and the wildlife who share our great state with us,” said Luke Metzger, executive director of Environment Texas.
Sen. Tan Parker, a sponsor of the original legislation, said the investment would help preserve the state’s heritage while providing new outdoor experiences for growing communities.
“Texas belongs to the people,” Parker said. “It is our responsibility to safeguard the lands that define our heritage while creating opportunities for new memories.”
If approved, development of the park would roll out in phases. Within 12 months, the public could see limited access and guided tours. Basic infrastructure like trails, restrooms and parking would follow within 18 months. A fully developed state park — complete with camping and visitor amenities — is planned within four years.
Texas Parks and Wildlife is accepting public comments on the proposal through Nov. 5, with a final vote on the acquisition expected Nov. 6.
The state has recently made several land acquisitions, including expansions at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and new parks near Garner and Colorado Bend State Parks.
