MILES, TX — Ozona running back Christian Villarreal delivered another spectacular performance Friday in the Lions’ 56-14 win over Miles.
Villarreal had 19 carries for 348 yards and six touchdowns, along with a pair of two-point conversions.
His start to the season has been so incredible that this game actually dropped his average.
Villarreal has piled up 1,772 rushing yards and 23 TDs in five games — an average of 354 yards per game at the halfway point of the regular season.
Ozona returned all five of its starting offensive linemen from last year, and they’ve helped pave the way for the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Villarreal to run wild as the Lions have climbed to No. 9 in the state rankings.
After a bye next week, Ozona will start District 3-2A Division I play at home against Reagan County.
Ozona improved to 5-0 with Friday’s win, while Miles fell to 1-4. The Bulldogs are also off next week before hosting Albany to begin 7-2A D-II play.
Ozona quarterback Michael Preddy was 6-of-13 passing for 117 yards and two TDs, and he had two carries for 88 yards.
Graciano Garcia had two catches for 73 yards and a TD.
Chapo Treto led Ozona’s defense with seven tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack. Jadon Vega had an interception.
Grape Creek Runs Over Tahoka
The Grape Creek Eagles churned out 364 yards on the ground and dominated on defense in a 41-0 win over Tahoka.
Darrell West led the way with 10 carries for 218 yards and three TDs, along with a 73-yard punt return for a TD.
West has rushed for over 100 yards in all five games to start the year.
Sire Garcia had 11 carries for 68 yards and a TD, along with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss.
Anthony Saavedra had 16 carries for 78 yards.
Gabe Santillan had a team-high 13 tackles, along with two tackles for loss and an interception.
Grape Creek improved to 3-2 and will play again next week when it visits San Angelo TLCA.
Brady Clipped by Ingram Moore
The Brady Bulldogs were playing catch-up all night and couldn’t quite overcome a slow start in a 37-33 loss to Ingram Moore.
Brady fell behind 23-7 at halftime.
Ashton Taylor led the Bulldogs with 27 carries for 224 yards and two TDs.
Sean Jacoby was 11-of-25 passing for 156 yards and a TD. Ethan Bernal had five catches for 85 yards and a TD.
Demarcus Reed led the defense with 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Brady fell to 3-2. The Bulldogs will be off next week before opening District 5-3A Division II play at home against Dublin.
Winters Shuts Out Abilene TLCA
The Winters Blizzards earned their second win of the season with a 59-0 shutout over Abilene TLCA.
Mark Moreno led the offense with five carries for 100 yards and two TDs, along with three catches for 63 yards and a TD.
Coy Martinez was 7-of-13 passing for 100 yards and two TDs, along with four carries for 56 yards.
Haydin Collins had six carries for 49 yards and two TDs, while Julian Ortiz had eight carries for 50 yards and a TD.
Winters (2-3) will be off next week before opening District 7-2A Division II play at Hamlin.
