Central Bobcats Claim Dominant Road Victory Over Belton

BELTON, TX — Explosive plays and stout defense saw the San Angelo Central Bobcats (2-2) dominate the Belton Tigers (2-2) at Tiger Stadium on Friday night. Bobcats' receiver Jimmy Edwards racked up three first-half touchdowns as the Bobcats put forth an outstanding performance to get back to .500, 49-21. Here is San Angelo Head Football Coach Mark Smith discussing the win:

The defining moments in the first half go straight to the Bobcats' stingy defense. On three separate occasions, the 'Cats have forced a turnover on downs. After Belton recovered an onside kick to open the contest, Central's defense stifled the Tigers for four straight plays to hand the ball to the offense. A tipped pass resulted in an interception on Micah Smith's first pass of the evening, but the Bobcats' defense was there to back their quarterback up. Another turnover on downs gave the ball right back to Smith and the offense.

The offense rewarded that with a touchdown. Zey Johnson put the Bobcats on the board shortly after with a 27-yard touchdown run. Micah Smith, who threw for over 150 yards in the first half, hooked up with Jimmy Edwards on his first of three first-half touchdowns following another turnover on downs on a 67-yard bomb.

The Tigers took advantage of an explosive play midway through the first quarter when a receiver snuck behind the defense for a 77-yard touchdown. That would be Belton's only points in the first half.

Smith converted a 4th and long on a 20-yard touchdown pass near the end of the 1st quarter to put the 'Cats back up by 14. Later in the 2nd quarter, Edwards collected his third touchdown pass from Smith on a 17-yard post to put the 'Cats up 28-7.

The Tigers put some offense together before the half, but the Bocbats were always there to slam the door shut when Belton threatened to score. A missed field goal and two punts from the Tigers ended the half.

Belton fought back well in the third quarter. The Tigers put together back-to-back scoring drives to try and stay in this ball, but there was one problem—Central's offense. Every time the Tigers scored, Central had an answer. Johnson scored his second touchdown on the night on a 6-yard touchdown before Colton Hill put the game away with a 19-yard score from Micah Smith.

The most impressive part about those two scoring drives was the time of possession. The Bobcats' o-line impressed their will on the Tigers as Central ran back-to-back 8-plus play drives that both ended in touchdowns. The final Bobcats drive of the 3rd quarter ended with Hill's score and more than 6:30 minutes off the clock. Here is San Angelo QB1 Micah Smith on the win over Belton:

Belton fought hard, but that far behind, there wasn't really any hope for the Tigers. The backups came into the game with under three minutes to play, and the Bobcats closed this one out to claim a 49-21 victory.

The Central Bobcats (2-2) return to action next Friday, September 26, when the 'Cats travel to Waco to play the Lions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
