NASHVILLE, TN — Rising country music star Conner Smith has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a 77-year-old woman crossing a Nashville street last month.
Smith, 24, was issued a misdemeanor citation Thursday night for failure to yield the right of way resulting in death, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Investigators say Smith was driving a Chevrolet Silverado on June 8 when he struck Dorothy Dobbins, 77, as she walked in a marked crosswalk. Dobbins was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died.
“After Dobbins was struck, witnesses reported Smith ran to her to render aid until NFD paramedics arrived,” police said in a statement.
Authorities found no signs of impairment or distracted driving at the time of the crash. The incident occurred while Smith was in town to perform during the CMA Fest, a major four-day country music event.
Smith’s attorney said the singer has cooperated fully with investigators.
“Conner is incredibly grateful to the MNPD for their time and efforts to carefully investigate this tragic accident,” the statement said. “His thoughts remain with Ms. Dobbins’ family, and he remains committed to honoring her memory by supporting efforts to improve pedestrian safety.”
Smith, a Nashville native, rose to national attention with his viral hit "I Hate Alabama" and released his debut album, Smoky Mountains, in 2024. He was nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards in 2023.
Following the crash, Smith withdrew from several scheduled performances. His next concert is listed for early August, according to his tour calendar.
