Each year, emergency responders across the country respond to fires and injuries caused by fireworks, many of which could be avoided with basic safety practices.

“If you plan to use fireworks outside of city limits, take extra precautions,” local officials said in a public safety announcement this week. “Even sparklers can cause serious injury if not used properly.”

Safety recommendations include:

  • Always supervise children around fireworks, including sparklers.

  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire.

  • Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Light fireworks one at a time and back away immediately.

  • Soak malfunctioning fireworks ("duds") in water before disposal.

  • Follow all manufacturer instructions. Never hold fireworks unless labeled safe to do so.

Officials also reminded the public that fireworks are illegal within San Angelo city limits and up to 5,000 feet beyond, under a city ordinance that prohibits the use, possession, storage, sale or receipt of fireworks in these areas.

Any fireworks found in violation of the ordinance will be seized and destroyed, with disposal costs charged to the owner.

For residents looking for legal ways to celebrate, officials recommend attending professional fireworks shows or using novelty items sold at permitted retail locations.

“Let’s keep this holiday safe—for you, your family, and our community,” the announcement concluded. “Happy Independence Day.”
