TEXAS CITY, TX — Firefighters saved three children from a balcony during a massive apartment fire in Texas City Wednesday morning. The rescue unfolded at the Del Sol Apartments located at the corner of Loop 197 and 25th Avenue.
Fire Chief Micah Simons reported that crews responded to the fire around 6:45 a.m. and received initial reports of people trapped inside the building. Upon arrival, firefighters spotted the children on a balcony and swiftly employed a ladder to reach and rescue them. Fortunately, the rescued children were examined and found to have suffered no injuries.
A woman, identified as Debbie Scales, rushed to the scene in search of her rescued grandchildren. While grateful for their safety, Scales lamented the loss of their dog and personal belongings. The affected families, including Scales', are now without a home as the building is deemed a total loss.
Life Flight and ambulances were initially dispatched as firefighters believed there might be people trapped inside. However, this turned out not to be the case, and no injuries were reported. The incident left 16 families homeless, and various organizations, including the Texas City Housing Authority, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the apartment complex, are working together to secure housing for those affected.
As of now, investigators have not been able to enter the building to determine the cause of the fire. This is an ongoing investigation and San Angelo LIVE is committed to delivering exclusive coverage and updates.
