BIG SPRING, TX — The City of Big Spring Fire Department has faced an ongoing exodus of firefighters since the summer of 2023 when the city council reduced staffing levels from 74 to 64.
Reports indicate that neighboring communities such as Midland, Lubbock, and Reeves County have lured employees away from Big Spring by offering more competitive pay.
The challenging situation appears poised to exacerbate for the Big Spring Fire Department, as Fire Station 2 has had to shutter operations five times since Christmas Eve due to staffing shortages.
The department faces unprecedented challenges in maintaining operational capacity, with Delk noting the loss of 20 firefighters within eight months, with around 15 departing for Midland. Projections suggest the department could be down by 25 to 30 personnel by spring, further complicating hiring efforts.
While response times have yet to suffer, the strain on the department is palpable.
Efforts to negotiate with the city for improved pay and benefits have proven unsuccessful, according to the BSFD.
