AUSTIN, TX – The 19-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for firing the weapon that injured several bystanders and killed one on 6th Street in Austin.
According to the Killeen Police Department, De’Ondre Jermirris White was arrested on Thursday by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the Killeen Police Department SWAT team.
The arrest affidavit for White states that on June 15 the Austin Police Department received an anonymous tip identifying "Dre" as the shooter. The caller also provided the police with White's address in Killeen.
One of the teens who had previously been arrested in connection to the case also identified White as the shooter. He told police White was standing next to him during the altercation with another group. According to the teen, White then fired the Glock 9mm over his shoulder when a member of the other group produced a gun.
After the shooting White and the teen returned to Killeen to a friend's apartment. White allegedly told the teen he had fired in self-defense and the teen said White had potentially saved his life.
Additional witnesses told police White and the teen were friends. He stated he was nearby when the shooting started and identified White as the shooter.
Forensic evidence gathered at the scene resulted in eight spent cartridges in front of the Mooseknuckle Pub. Ballistics determined the cases were fired from the same gun. They narrowed down the identified the gun as being a Smith and Wesson M&P, a Smith and Wesson Sigma, or a Generation 5 Glock.
On June 20th, investigators spoke with White's aunt who volunteered to drive White to Austin for a voluntary interview the next day.
During the interview, White told police he got into an argument with an individual wearing a blue ski mask. The other individual belonged to the other group.
White said he turned away and heard gunfire coming from the other group. Ballistic evidence later proved the situation did not play out as White claimed.
According to police, all the victims were standing in the street or south curb line. The evidence showed the firearm was likely fired from the north curb line to the south -- indicating only one weapon was fired in the shooting.
White was arrested without incident and he will be charged with murder. His bond will be set at $1 million.
“We’re grateful to the Lone Star Task Force and APD for bringing Mr. White into custody,” said Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza. “We know this has been a scary and stressful time, and appreciate our community's patience throughout the investigation. Based on both forensic and eyewitness testimony, we have full confidence that the person responsible for the shooting has been arrested and is no longer a danger to our community. At this time, we believe that Mr. White was the only shooter.
