AUSTIN, TX – Following the unrest at the nation's capitol, state governments are preparing for riots and protests at state capitol buildings.
Earlier this week, the FBI issued a bulletin that warned armed protests were being planned through Inauguration Day.
The bulletin stated in part: "Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the U.S. Capitol from 17 January through 20 January."
The Texas Department of Public Safety issued the following message to local media outlets.
"The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is continuously monitoring events and their impact on public safety. As a result, the department has deployed additional personnel and resources to the Texas State Capitol. While we do not discuss operational specifics, DPS will continue to adjust our operations as needed to maintain public order and address potential threats. The department remains committed to proactively protecting the people and property of Texas."
The Travis County Sheriff's Office stated "their special response team is ready to respond or assist with protest if needed." It appears the sheriff's office has not yet been asked to deploy the special team.
The “Freedom is a Right” protest has been planned for 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 17 at the Texas State Capitol building.
The U.S. Attorneys that represent Texas's four districts announced they would prosecute any crimes committed at the State Capitol or elsewhere in the state in violation of federal law before the presidential inauguration.
“During this time of polarized political discord, freedom of speech is an important right that must be safeguarded, but those who threaten to harm others, commit acts of violence, destroy property or attack law enforcement must be held accountable for their criminal behavior,” said U.S. Attorney Gregg N. Sofer. “Now, more than ever, we must respect the rule of law. The Texas United States Attorneys’ Offices along with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners will pursue federal charges against those who refuse to do so.”
