Mother Accused of Murdering Teenage Son

RIESEL, TX -- A mother is accused of murdering her 17-year-old son for no apparent reason near Waco Monday.

According to police, 39-year-old Sarah Hunt was driving with her son Garrett, on Monday near Waco.

During the ride, Hunt inexplicably shot Garrett multiple times. She then abandoned his body and the car and began walking back into Riesel.

The vehicle was spotted by a passerby who called the police. Hunt was arrested while walking on the side of the road.

“At this point, we don’t have a motive, we don’t know what happened, we don’t know what led up to this, it’s a big mystery, and that’s what we’re trying to determine--what caused this,” said McLennan County Sheriff McNamara. “It’s a very sad, tragic situation, I don’t know how else to describe it."

Hunt is employed at Waco ISD as a 5th-grade social studies and science teacher. She was previously employed at Andrews ISD.

Riesel ISD confirmed Garratt was not enrolled at Riesel High School, but the family had recently moved to the area.

Hunt has been charged with murder and her bond has been set at $500,000.
