Snyder Man Killed in Violent Crash

SOUTHLAND, TX --  The Department of Public Safety has confirmed the death of a Snyder man after a violent crash occurred between an SUV and a minivan.

According to DPS, six other people were injured in the Saturday afternoon crash.

A 2005 Lincoln Navigator was traveling north on US Hwy 84 when one of the tires had a blowout. When the driver applied the emergency brake he lost control and swerved into the median and rolled.

Christopher Wayne Scates of Snyder was traveling south on the highway when he saw Navigator lose control.

Scates applied the breaks to his 2014 Chrysler Town and Country passenger van, but as the Navigator rolled and went airborne it struck the top of the Chrysler before rolling several times.

Scates succumbed to his injuries, while his passengers, a 25-year-old woman, and a 2-year-old boy, were injured. The child was in a child safety seat.

The driver of the Navigator was traveling with three 4-year-old boys. According to authorities, only one of the boys was in a child safety seat.

The two unsecured boys suffered incapacitating injuries, but all four were transported to a hospital.
