SAN ANTONIO, TX —A Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy is behind bars after he allegedly allowed an inmate to get severely beaten.
According to KTXS, 33-year-old Jean Carlos Camacho-Morales knew about the beating and did nothing to stop it from happening.
“He basically allowed it to happen and didn’t sound the alarm,” said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. “So, while this poor victim is laying back there in the shower, beaten pretty severely, he stood by and did nothing and allowed the attack to continue.”
According to Salazar, Camacho-Morales sounded the alarm regarding an injured inmate and claimed the 44-year-old victim had been attacked. The subsequent investigation revealed Camacho-Morales waited before sounding the alarm.
The internal investigation revealed the deputy knew the attack would happen and allowed it to continue. Camacho-Morales is also accused of turning off the lights in the shower area so the attack could occur.
“It became pretty obvious that he was not being truthful, a supervisor found video from the living unit that did not in fact support the claims that came from Camacho very early on,” said Salazar. “The victim was actually beaten several times by several other inmates involved in the attack, while this person here stood by and did nothing, which is infuriating.”
According to Salazar, during the initial investigation, Camacho-Morales pointed to other people who were not involved in order to get them in trouble. The sheriff’s office is currently investigating the incident that left the victim severely injured.
One inmate has been charged and additional perpetrators are expected to be charged in the coming days. The victim remains hospitalized and suffered extensive damage during the beating.
“My understanding is he’s got some facial fractures, there’s definitely some damaged vertebrae on his spine,” said Salazar. “He had been intubated for some time overnight last night but my understanding is that breathing tube has been removed.”
Camacho-Morales was arrested on Tuesday and is charged with aggravated assault, official oppression and tampering with a government record. He will also be served with termination paperwork.
