Coronavirus: Family Members Test Positive After Birthday Party

CARROLLTON, TX –  A surprise birthday party resulted in 18 family members testing positive for the coronavirus. A North Texas man is horrified as his father fights for his life in a north Texas hospital intensive care unit.

Ron Barbosa, who is married to a doctor and refused to attend the May 30 party for his daughter-in-law due to safety concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic, said of those hospitalized were his parents, both in their 80′s, and a sister who is also battling breast cancer at this time.

Barbosa claims his nephew unknowingly infected with the virus at the time hosted a gathering of 25 people for a family member's birthday which only lasted a few hours, and still followed the state’s latest health guidelines.

During the party the nephew interacted with several family members including seven relatives who unknowingly spread it to an additional 10 other family members, including two young children.

On Thursday Gov. Greg said Texas would immediately halt it's aggressive reopening as the state deals with a surge in positive coronavirus cases and hospitalizations which has made the state a virus hot spot.

Statewide, the number of positive coronavirus patients has more than doubled in just two weeks.

In the last two days alone Texas has reported more than 11,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus.

Barbosa's mother, Carole, said she stopped by the event to drop something off, later tested positive for coronavrius on June 6, and was admitted to the hospital a week later.

Barbosa says his father Frank didn't attend the get together but later contracted COVID-19, and was hospitalized on June 17.

Frank recently received a plasma donation on Wednesday from a recovered coronavirus patient, but still remains on life support at this time according to Barbosa’s personal Facebook page.

“Prayers were answered today," Barbosa wrote on Facebook.

“Now he (Frank) needs to get well for mom and the Barbosa Family."

Barbosa says his family remains united despite feeling an uneasy "pendulum of emotions" over the last few weeks.
