COLEMAN COUNTY, TX — The Padgitt Ranch, a 5,900-acre property that has remained with the same family for 145 years, is on the market for $21 million. Once the largest fenced ranch in Texas, it boasts 10 miles of frontage on Lake O.H. Ivie and was listed by Dullnig Ranch Sales.
Founded in the 1870s by cattleman William Day, the ranch became a piece of Texas history under the stewardship of his wife, Mabel Doss Day, following his death in 1881. She managed the property and played a pivotal role during the "fence-cutting war of 1883," lobbying lawmakers to pass a law making fence-cutting a crime.
By 1906, Mabel Day had cleared the ranch of debt and passed it on to her daughter, Willie Mabel Day, who later married James Thomas Padgitt. Much of the land remains in the family today.
The property features pastures, seasonal creeks, active springs, and two historic homes, including one dating back to 1871.
It also offers recreational opportunities with its extensive Lake O.H. Ivie frontage. Recognized in 1999 by the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Family Land Heritage program, the ranch has been continuously operated by the same family for more than a century.
