Texas Ends Annual Vehicle Inspections Wednesday

SAN ANGELO, TX - Starting Wednesday, Texas drivers in most counties will no longer need to complete annual vehicle safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles.

A new law, House Bill 3297, eliminates the inspections but retains a $7.50 fee now labeled as the “inspection program replacement fee,” which will appear on registration renewal notices.

For newly registered vehicles, owners will pay a $16.75 replacement fee covering the first two years of registration. The law, however, does not affect commercial vehicles, which will still require annual safety inspections.

Drivers in 17 Texas counties, including Harris, Dallas, and Travis, will still need to pass emissions inspections. Other counties impacted include Brazoria, Collin, Denton, El Paso, and Fort Bend, among others.

The change, passed by the 88th Legislature, aims to streamline vehicle registration.
