BAYTOWN, TX – The fight over public schools named after leaders of the Confederacy continues in Texas and this time Confederate General and the former commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee, won the battle.
From Midland to San Angelo to Austin to Houston, there has been an uproar in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd to rename schools that honor members of the Confederate States of America.
Schools such as Robert Lee High School in Midland and Tyler ISD's Lee High School and John Tyler High School have already been told that they will be changing their name. Since mass petitions were started to change names of schools, the majority of districts have conceded to the mob and changed their name.
In Baytown, Goose Creak CISD received a petition regarding the name change of their Robert E. Lee High School. The district held an eight-and-a-half-hour-long meeting online discussing the name change. In the meeting, the board of trustees heard from 51 speakers and read 44 written responses. After it was all said and done, the school board trustees voted 4-3 against renaming Baytown's Robert E. Lee High School. They did however vote 5-0 n favor of forming a committee “to investigate the possible renaming of current school facilities.”
Meanwhile in San Angelo, San Angelo ISD has set up a "Engaging Equity Public Summit" on September 15 to discuss renaming of San Angelo's Robert E Lee Middle School. This is the latest step the district has made regarding the name change.
