Explosive First Half Helps Christoval Clear Brady in Pre-District Matchup

CHRISTOVAL— The Brady Bulldogs and Christoval Cougars squared off against each other at Jack Pardee Memorial Stadium on Friday night to see who could claim their last victory before both teams have their bye week.

The 1-3 Brady Bulldogs travelled to Christoval to take on the 1-3 Christoval Cougars. Both teams have a bye week scheduled next week then start their district play after that. The schedule and records aren’t the only way these teams are similar as they both had a number of injuries, good running games, and sophomore quarterbacks.

Christoval kicked off to Brady and when they went to punt the ball away in the early opening quarter, the punt was blocked, and sophomore Eli Burchett recovered the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. The score ended up Christoval 6-0 over Brady after a failed two-point conversion. Those would be the only points in the opening frame.

Early in the second quarter, senior Cougar Jake Edmiston took the ball 44-yards to the endzone and after a successful point after try, Christoval had momentum and a 13-0 lead over the Bulldogs.

Shortly after the Edmiston score, Brady would wake up and Bulldog quarterback Sean Jacoby would find Ethan Bernal for a quick 7-yard score. Brady would close the lead 13-8 after a successful two-point conversion.

Christoval would try a fake punt that turned into Brady’s football. After a good defensive play by Christoval they took over with about two minutes left in the first half. That would be more than enough time for junior running back Manuel Riojas to find the endzone 77-yards down the field. The Cougars extended their lead to 20-8 after a successful point after try.

The Cougars received the ball after halftime and tried several misdirection plays but Brady snuffed it out. Then, with about four and a half minutes left in the third, Brady running back Ashton Taylor took the ball 27-yards for a score and Brady would end up four points down, 20-16.

The score wouldn’t change after a high snap went over Christoval punter, Isreal Bogs’s head, a ball that Brady recovered as Jacoby would toss an interception to the Cougar’s defensive back, Blaze Webber in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

The ball would exchange hands and with about two minutes left in the game, Brady still down only four points, Bulldog sophomore DeMarcus Reed had a big stop to bring up fourth down. Then, Jacoby would find Randall Mendez down the Bulldog sideline for a huge pass play. Mendez would take the ball down near the 10-yard line.

But, with 52 seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs would fumble the ball on about the five-yard line and the Cougars would recover and kneel out the game, winning 20-16.

The Cougars improve to 2-3 on the season and head coach Casey Otho had this to say after the game.

Christoval gets a much-needed week off next week and come back with a monster trip to Anthony, Texas to take on the Wildcats in their district opener. The Bulldogs fell to 1-4 and have a number of players injured heading into the bye week. They’ll need the rest as they’ll come back with their district opener against the TLCA San Angelo Eagles, who beat the Stanton Buffaloes 41-0 and are riding a 3-2 record.
