Friday Night Roundup: Menard Beats Water Valley in Top 10 Battle

WATER VALLEY, TX — The No. 9-ranked Menard Yellowjackets jumped all over No. 5 Water Valley on Friday and coasted to a 65-37 win.

Menard led 31-0 by the end of the first quarter in a stunning start to the game.

Water Valley battled back to within 43-29 midway through the third quarter, but Menard scored the next three touchdowns to put the game away.

No individual stats are available yet.

It was a matchup of teams that had 5-0 records and two of the best six-man players in the state — Menard’s Cohen Ethridge and Water Valley’s Branson Lacy.

Menard managed to do something no team had so far this season, and that’s slow down Lacy, who entered the game having already produced over 2,600 yards of offense and 51 TDs.

Menard improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in District 8-1A Division I. The Yellow Jackets will get a forfeit win next week over Eden, which has canceled its varsity schedule due to a lack of numbers. Menard’s next game is Oct. 23 at home against Sterling City.

Water Valley (5-1 overall, 0-1 in district) will need to run the table to claim the second and final playoff spot out of this district. The Wildcats’ next game is Oct. 16 at Irion County.

This story will be updated when stats are available.
