2A Division I Crown Could be Up for Grabs This Football Season

SAN ANGELO, TX — Texas Football is picking either the Ozona Lions or Sonora Broncos to win District 4-2A Division I.

While Texas Football magazine predicted Ozona would repeat as district champs, reporter Matt Stepp picked Sonora to overtake Ozona in his projections released Friday, July 10.

Stepp's rankings are as follows:

  1. Sonora Broncos
  2. Ozona Lions
  3. Forsan Buffaloes
  4. Ballinger Bearcats
  5. Christoval Cougars
  6. Reagan County Owls
  7. Colorado City Wolves

Last season, the Ozona Lions literally ran away with the district, posting a perfect 10-0 regular season before coming up short against Anson in the bi-district round.

They’ll return eight offensive and six defensive starters but lost two huge contributors to graduation in running back Christian Villarreal and quarterback Michael Preddy.

Watch out for Kaleb Ramon, Nolan Martinez, Andon Glosson, Boston Pitts and Jay Borrego to step up and take the snaps left on the field.

The Sonora Broncos return nine on offense and seven on defense and get both quarterback Aaron Segura and running back/linebacker Armani Coronado back. Segura is heading into his third season at QB, and Coronado was a tackling machine for the Broncos with 111 stops.

Also in the backfield is Angel Diaz who contributed on the ground and through the air last year. Maybe the biggest reason to be excited for this offense is the return of the receivers in Jayden Welborn and Wyatt Killough, along with tight end Evan Arredondo, who also made plays on the defensive side of the ball.

Do not rule out the Forsan Buffaloes who have had a couple of uncharacteristic down seasons. Over the last two years, the Buffaloes have gone 6-15 but have started the season off with a gauntlet of games. In district play, Forsan has gone a respectable 5-5 although that is still down for the program. They’ll get back a load of talent in Coy Evans, Owen Bishop, Ashton Ellis and Korbett Worden. They could absolutely sneak into the conversation for district champs.

Ballinger is the new kid on the block as they played in a different district with De Leon and state champion Hamilton for the last realignment after moving down from 3A a few years ago. But the Bearcats return eight starters on both sides of the football headlined by skill players Hunter Kresta and Pierson Nord, while Josh Martinez will handle things on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Christoval had a new head coach in Tanner McLean last year after he took over for Casey Otho. The Cougars were hit pretty hard by graduation as they only return four starters on offense, but they bring back seven on defense. Quarterback Ty DeBusk accounted for just over 2,000 yards as a sophomore last year and threw 11 touchdowns, although he threw 15 interceptions in his first season as a starter. He’ll have Kanin Green to throw to and a couple of options at running back to help carry the load.

The Reagan County Owls took a step backwards last year after losing a D-I talent at quarterback and defensive back in Kason Brown a couple of seasons ago. Last year, the Owls went 3-7 overall and 1-4 in district play but now return nine on offense and eight on defense. Of the offensive starters, quarterback Marques Vargas, running back Hector Rios and receiver Dominic Johnson are back as linemen Kellan Saucedo and Gavin Reyes. Reagan County could be in the mix for a playoff spot after missing out last year.

The Colorado City Wolves finished in last place after going 1-9 overall and 1-4 in district but, they return a large portion of their team. Nine offensive and eight defensive starters come back led by quarterback Ace Mejia. He’ll be protected by an experienced offensive line with Aiden Wooddell, Curtis Lindsey and Jace Garcia, who will also get after it on defense. Linebacker Noah Atkinson also comes back along with Davin Lara and Jadon Reyna.

Right now, the district crown is Ozona’s to lose, but they will have to fight off a talented bunch of teams to keep it. Sonora is the main threat, but do not count out Forsan even if they enter district play 1-3. In the end, this district is wide open with a throne for the taking.
