TRINIDAD, TX — The town of Trinidad will rename its football field after Kevin Ray, who led the Trojans to their only state title in 1998.
Ray died on May 29 due to an illness at the age of 66.
Ray was a longtime six-man football coach who also had stops in the West Texas towns of Grandfalls and Rankin, along with Blum, Milford, Aspermont, O'Donnell, Bryson and Yukon, Oklahoma.
He was inducted into the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2022. He had a career record of 222-102.
Ray’s best season came in 1998 when he led Trinidad to a 15-0 record, capped by a 62-16 win over Borden County in the state final.
He also had memorable playoff runs to the state semifinals with Trinidad in 1997 and state quarterfinals with Grandfalls in 2000.
Trinidad will rename its field to Kevin Ray Field on Oct. 3 when the Trojans host Fruitvale.
