DALLAS, TX— A college coach has agreed to make the move to the NBA and take over a fast-falling and much-scrutinized Dallas team.
According to ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania, the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly finalizing a deal to hire Michigan head coach Dusty May. He led Michigan to the national title in 2026 and went 64-13 over two seasons with the Wolverines.
Before Michigan, May was the head coach at Florida Atlantic and took the Owls to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Final Four in 2023. Over May’s career, he has a 69.9% winning percentage.
The Mavericks organization seems to be in free fall after trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angelas Lakers last year. That move led to the Mavericks firing general manager Nico Harrison in November. Also, former Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was fired following this past season after going 26-56.
Since the Doncic trade, Dallas has focused on a full rebuild led by Cooper Flagg on the court. The hiring of May gives Flagg a new head coach to continue to grow and build under.
The last time a college coach moved to an NBA team was ironically John Beilein from Michigan, who went to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019.
