LUBBOCK, TX — Amid gambling addictions and legal issues, Texas Tech’s star transfer quarterback is reportedly sidestepping it all and entering the NFL Supplemental Draft.
It has been a mess for Sorsby since transferring to Tech in January after signing an NIL deal worth around $5 million. In March, the NCAA began investigating allegations that Sorsby was gambling.
According to reports, Sorsby was gambling on his own teams when he was at Indiana and Cincinnati, which made the situation a major issue. The NCAA declared him ineligible, and Sorsby ended up filing suit against the NCAA.
In early June, a Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction, meaning he would be eligible for the upcoming season.
On Monday, June 15, the Big 12 filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Tech. But on the same day, Sorsby said he intends to enter the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.
The supplemental draft is a secondary summer draft for college players who missed the standard spring draft filing deadline or unexpectedly lost their collegiate ability. How it works is NFL teams submit bids secretly for the player they want. If multiple teams bid for a player, the team with the highest-round pick attached to the player gets him. Then, that team loses that pick for next year’s draft. For example, Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon was drafted out of the 2012 Supplemental Draft in the second round by the Cleveland Browns, and the Browns gave up their 2013 second-round draft pick.
Several notable players have utilized the supplemental draft like Bernie Kosar in 1985, Cris Carter in 1987 and Ahmad Brooks in 2006. Current Dallas Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson is the most recent player who entered the NFL through the supplemental draft.
For Cincinnati last season, Sorsby was 207-of-336 for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. In 2024, he threw for 2,813 yards, but he only threw 18 TDs to seven INTs. Sorsby is also a threat on the ground as he rushed for 447 and 580 yards in 2024 and 2025, respectively, with a combined 18 TDs.
For the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft, players must apply by June 22, 2026.
Entering the supplemental draft could be a good thing for Sorsby as he would have to contend with possibly Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Julian Sayin and LaNorris Sellers next spring.
It is also worth noting that the NFL could suspend Sorsby for his conduct in college.
