OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — For the second consecutive season, the national softball championship will be decided between Texas Tech and Texas.
The Red Raiders had to beat No. 1 Alabama twice Monday to make it happen, and Texas Tech got it done to set up a rematch with No. 2 Texas for the College World Series title.
Last year, Texas won its first-ever national title in softball with a win over Texas Tech in the decisive Game 3. It was the Red Raiders’ first appearance in the championship series and their first trip to the World Series.
Now Texas Tech (61-8) has a chance to make more program history if it can dethrone Texas (51-12), which will be playing in the championship for the fourth time in the last five years.
The best-of-three series starts Wednesday and will be broadcast on ESPN. Game 2 will be Thursday, and an if-necessary Game 3 will be Friday. All of the games will start at 7 p.m.
No. 11-ranked Texas Tech beat Alabama 5-4 in the first game Monday when Mia Williams hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The second game of the day was a dominant two-hit shutout by NiJaree Canady — the million-dollar arm — who willed her team to a 2-0 win. Canady also recorded the win in the first game.
Jasmyn Burns had a HR in the fourth inning, and Lauren Allred singled in another run in the seventh to give Tech all the offense it would need.
