Second Defending State Champ Out of Baseball Playoffs After Forfeit

CENTERVILLE, TX — An unusual baseball postseason continued Wednesday when Centerville became the second defending state champion to forfeit due to using an ineligible player.

Centerville, last year’s Class 2A Division I state champ, follows 5A Division II Grapevine as a team that won’t be able to defend its title this spring.

Centerville announced Wednesday it was forfeiting after receiving notice Monday from the UIL of allegations involving an ineligible player.

After an internal review, Centerville confirmed it was true and reported the finding to the UIL, ending its season.

Centerville, which had a record of 19-7-1, was set to play in the regional semifinals this week against Harleton. Shelbyville, the team Centerville defeated last week, will now take Centerville’s place.

Two-time defending state champ and No. 1-ranked Grapevine was knocked out of the playoffs right before they began after the school reported it had used an ineligible player.

The issue also occurred in the softball playoffs, where Jacksboro had to forfeit after eliminating Wall, which then returned to the postseason and defeated No. 8 Canadian last week to advance to the regional final this week.
