ANDREWS, TX — The Christoval Cougars dropped Game 1 of the Class 2A Division I regional semifinal Thursday against New Home, 15-5.
The Cougars are making their first appearance in the regional semifinals. Their program is relatively young after starting in 2018.
New Home, meanwhile, has some strong tradition with five trips to the state semifinals since 2018, including a runner-up finish last year.
Christoval led 3-2 after the top of the third inning Thursday, but New Home scored nine times in the bottom of the third to take an 11-3 lead.
The Leopards were able to end the game early by the 10-run mercy rule when they scored twice in the sixth inning.
Christoval was held to five hits but made the most of them to score five runs. Ryler Hunt went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the way. Ty DeBusk had a triple, Blaze Webber had a double and Tucker Boness had a single.
Christoval fell to 18-7-1, while New Home improved to 25-7.
To keep its season alive, Christoval will need to win twice Saturday, beginning with Game 2 at 1 p.m. in Andrews.
