SAN ANGELO, TX — A few of our area’s girls basketball teams punched their ticket Thursday to the third round of the playoffs, while others had heartbreaking endings.
The No. 2-ranked Mason Cowgirls continued their remarkable season with a 50-33 win over Skidmore-Tynan in the area round of the Class 2A Division I bracket.
It was the 29th win in a row for the Cowgirls, who improved to 37-1.
Mason will face Iola (22-11) or Schulenburg (25-8), both of which are unranked, early next week in the regional semifinals.
The only team to beat Mason this year, Ozona, also advanced Thursday with a 43-30 win over Sundown, led by 13 points from junior Avery Davidson.
The Lady Lions are unranked, but they’re clearly a dangerous team, especially this time of year. This was their fifth playoff win over the last two seasons, and they’re led by longtime head coach Jerry McSherry, who just won his 701st career game.
Ozona (26-8) will play Wellington (26-7) or New Deal (14-13) early next week in the 2A Division I regional semifinals.
Irion County, which is ranked No. 23 in Class 1A, defeated Buena Vista on Thursday, though a score is unavailable from that contest.
The Lady Hornets improved to 26-5 and advanced to the 1A DI regional semifinals early next week against either No. 4 Hermleigh (32-2) or Rotan (11-14).
Two of our area’s teams, Christoval and Reagan County, saw their seasons end Thursday with close defeats.
No. 21-ranked Christoval lost 41-39 in overtime to No. 5 Whiteface in the 2A DII bracket, which was a difficult second-round draw for the Lady Cougars.
Christoval had won 16 of its last 17 games heading into the matchup and looked like one of the best teams in the Concho Valley. They beat Whiteface 27-26 in overtime in this same round last year when the Lady Antelopes were also ranked No. 5 in the state.
An impressive season for Christoval — which lost two college-bound players from last year — ended with a record of 28-7.
Reagan County lost 39-36 Thursday to Ropes in the area round of the 2A DI bracket.
The Lady Owls’ season ended with a record of 21-13. They earned a solid 43-27 first-round win over Colorado City and nearly claimed a second playoff trophy.
The playoffs will continue tonight, highlighted by No. 1 Wall taking on Tolar in a rematch of last year’s second-round game that Tolar won 53-48.
No. 3 Idalou is waiting in the regional semifinals if Wall can get past Tolar.
Other area matchups tonight include Sterling City vs. Smyer, Garden City vs. Rankin, Blackwell vs. Sanderson, and Robert Lee vs. Grandfalls.
The only boys matchup from Thursday involved Menard and Eden in a first-place tiebreaker in Junction.
Fans couldn't have asked for more in the game between the two longtime rivals as Menard won 41-40 to earn the district's top seed.
Menard (16-14) will now face Garden City (11-15) in its 1A DI playoff opener early next week, while Eden (19-14) draws No. 20 Water Valley (17-3).
