WALL, TX — A dominant defensive performance in the second quarter by Wall (20-5 overall, 4-0 in district) saw the Hawks claim a double-digit district victory over Clyde (17-6, 2-1) on Tuesday night. Jager Thompson exploded with 30 points as Wall cruised to a 64-45 victory.
"I'm just really proud of our guys," Wall head coach Parker Roberts said. "That's a really good basketball team. They are physical, they have some bigs that match up well with us, and I knew it was going to be a battle."
Roberts' words were spot on as both teams traded runs throughout the first quarter to be tied at 19-19 headed to the second.
However, that's when Wall turned it on defensively. The Hawks capitalized on several Bulldog turnovers to slowly pull away. At one point, the Hawks were up by as much as 22 points in the period. Led by Thompson's aggressive play at the basket, Wall built a 44-24 lead headed to the break. The most impressive stat by far was the five points Wall allowed in that second quarter.
But like all good teams, Clyde battled back in the third quarter. It was the Bulldogs' turn to start causing turnovers and making a run. Clyde pulled back within 10 points before Wall finally woke back up. Some clutch three-point shooting down the stretch put the Hawks back up big as Wall closed out the game.
"Jager — that dude is a spark plug," Roberts said of his guard. "When he's in attack mode, it's tough to guard him, and everyone else feeds off of that."
Thompson joined the basketball team late this season due to being a key member of the state championship Wall football team last semester.
Next up, the Hawks put their seven-game winning streak on the line when the Jim Ned Indians come to town at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20.
