Top 10 Quarterbacks to Watch in West Texas in 2025

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are our top 10 quarterbacks to watch heading into the upcoming 2025 high school football season in West Texas:

Landon York, Wall, Sr.

York thrived last season in his first year directing the Hawks’ new spread offense. He threw for 3,767 yards and 48 touchdowns with only seven interceptions while completing nearly 67% of his passes. He led Wall to a 13-2 record and its first trip to the state semifinals in eight years. With York back at the helm — along with three returning receivers and three more starters on the offensive line — the Hawks have their sights set firmly on a run at a state title.

Wall’s first-year starting quarterback, Landon York, stepped in and directed the offense like a veteran, throwing for 3,767 yards and 48 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. He completed nearly 67% of his passes.

Brenner Sherwood, Robert Lee, Sr.

No one accounted for more yards in West Texas last year than Sherwood. The spread back threw for 2,186 yards and 32 touchdowns with only one interception, and he rushed for 2,013 yards and 41 TDs, averaging 11.4 yards per carry. He did it all in 11 games and was named second-team all-state. He led Robert Lee to a 7-4 season and makes them a dangerous contender again this fall.

Chris Alvizo, Lake View, Jr.

Alvizo had a breakout sophomore season last year for the Chiefs after being pressed into duty in the season opener. He grabbed the starting job and ran with it, providing a glimpse of some exciting potential. He threw for 2,106 yards and 29 TDs, completing 65% of his passes, and he added 263 rushing yards. With one of the area’s top receivers, Braylon White, returning with him, Alvizo could take another step this year as one of the top QBs in West Texas.

Liam Yancy, Miles, Jr.

Yancy stepped right into the starting QB position last year as a sophomore and led Miles to an 8-3 record while directing an offense that averaged 36 points per game. He threw for 2,472 yards and 34 TDs with 10 INTs, completing 64% of his passes. Yancy is one of only four returning starters, however, and he’ll be counted on to lead an inexperienced team this fall.

Landon Lacy, Water Valley, Sr.

Lacy led Water Valley to its best playoff run in program history last year with an 11-3 record and a trip to the state semifinals. He threw for 1,803 yards and 41 touchdowns with three interceptions, completing 62% of his passes. He also had 91 carries for 792 rushing yards and 19 TDs. On defense, he was a first-team all-state safety. As one of four returning starters back, Lacy has the firepower to help the Wildcats contend for a state title.

Sean Jacoby, Brady, Sr.

Jacoby is heading into his third year as Brady’s starting QB. After taking his lumps as a sophomore, he helped the Bulldogs to a five-win improvement last year as they went 8-3 and finished as the runner-up in district. He was 72-of-118 passing for 1,086 yards and 13 TDs with five INTs, completing 61% of his passes. He also had 85 carries for 505 rushing yards and six TDs. During the summer, he led the Bulldogs to the 7-on-7 state tournament for the second time in his career.

Chasen Doyal, Junction, Sr.

Doyal didn’t put up eye-popping numbers last fall, but he directed one of the highest-scoring offenses in the area at 44 points per game. He threw for 1,606 yards and 25 TDs with only three INTs on 59% passing. He also had 353 rushing yards and four TDs. He took his passing game to another level during the summer when he led Junction to its first-ever trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament.

Aaron Segura, Sonora, Jr.

Segura took the reins of the Broncos’ offense last year as a sophomore and threw for 2,767 yards and 24 TDs with 14 INTs, while completing 61% of his passes. He has also led Sonora to back-to-back appearances at the 7-on-7 state tournament. That experience should help give the Broncos a stabilizing force to begin the season.

Micah Smith, Central, Jr./Colton Hill, Central, Sr.

The next starting QB for the Central Bobcats is still to be decided. Whoever it is will have big shoes to fill in replacing two-year starter Christian “Squeaky” English, who threw for 4,460 yards and 35 TDs while rushing for 2,042 yards and 37 TDs over the course of 20 games. Senior Colton Hill (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) should compete for the job, but he’s also the team’s best receiver, despite missing most of last season with a leg injury. Junior Micah Smith (6-0, 180) is also a contender to become Central’s next QB.

JonnieRae Adame, Eldorado, Sr.

Adame threw for 1,812 yards and 18 TDs last fall in his first season as the Eagles’ starting QB to lead them to a 5-6 record and a trip to the playoffs. Then he helped Eldorado reach the 7-on-7 state tournament for the first time since 2021 during the summer. Adame will be an important player for Eldorado to build around this fall.
