Angelo State Legend Phil George Celebrates 101st Birthday

SAN ANGELO, TX — Legendary Angelo State University men’s basketball coach Phil George celebrated his 101st birthday on Tuesday, June 3.

George spent 36 years in athletics at ASU, highlighted by leading the Rams basketball team to the 1957 National Junior College Athletic Association championship.

He became the school’s first full-time athletic director in 1978, the same year ASU’s football team won the NAIA national title.

In 2019, George was honored with his name on the basketball court at ASU’s Junell Center.

Before his coaching career, George served in World War II and the Vietnam War.

Last year, Rep. August Pfluger commemorated George’s 100th birthday on the House Floor in Washington D.C.

“When you think about the 'Greatest Generation,' you think about Mr. Phil George,” Pfluger said.
