STERLING CITY, TX — Sterling City head football coach and athletic director DJ Howell has accepted a new job at Fort Stockton, where he will serve in the same roles.
Howell spent only one year at Class 2A Sterling City, where he led the Eagles to a 4-7 record and a playoff berth.
He previously spent three years coaching six-man football in the Panhandle town of Miami, where he oversaw a school-record 12-1 season.
With knowledge at both the 11-man and six-man levels, Howell seemed like the perfect fit for Sterling City, which won a state title in six-man in 2020 but has spent the last three years playing at the 11-man level.
The Eagles are expected to return to the six-man game in 2026.
Howell will replace Jeremy Hickman, who left for Cypress Woods after leading the Panthers to a 25-9 record the last three years.
Fort Stockton was 6-5 last year and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Howell, who is from Odessa, has spent the majority of his 25-year coaching career in Oklahoma, which includes 16 years as a head coach.
Howell was picked out of 65 applicants, according to Fort Stockton ISD.
