3 New Leaders Emerge at San Angelo Rodeo

SAN ANGELO, TX — At 43 years old, Kassie Mowry is still at the top of her game.

The barrel racer from Dublin, Texas, won her first world title last year after winning five of the 10 rounds at the National Finals Rodeo.

On Friday, she rode into town for the sixth performance of the San Angelo Rodeo and took over the lead with a run of 14.01 seconds.

Mowry edged past Garden City’s Jordan Driver, who had been the leader with a time of 14.04.

Another Texas cowgirl, Weatherford’s Sophie Palmore, moved into third place with a time of 14.20.

Mowry was one of three new leaders after Friday’s performance at CRC Roofers Coliseum.

Alberta’s Logan Hay had an 87.5 in saddle bronc to vault into the top spot, passing his brother, Dawson, and Thayne Elshere, who had an 85.5.

In team roping, the duo of South Carolina’s Luke Brown and Colorado’s Trey Yates clocked a time of 3.8 seconds to move into a tie for first place.

Other top performances included bull rider Colorado Kid Mackey scoring an 83.5 on Punk, a bull that had never before been ridden.

The ride moved the 18-year-old from Ignacio, Colorado, into sixth place.

South Dakota’s Mason Moody had an 80 to move into eighth.

Only nine bull riders have recorded a score.

Two area competitors from Sonora — Sam Powers in steer wrestling and Word Hudson in tie-down roping — each failed to record a time.

The rodeo will continue with performances at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
