CHICAGO, IL — Former San Angelo Central star Davis Martin picked up his first win since 2022 on Friday to help the Chicago White Sox earn an 11-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
Wins have been hard to come by for the 28-year-old, who missed all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery, then returned late last season for a team with the worst record in Major League Baseball.
On Friday, Martin allowed only six hits and one run before he left in the seventh inning.
He fired 63 of his 89 pitches for strikes. He struck out six and walked one.
Martin’s gem allowed the White Sox to end an eight-game losing streak and improve their record to 3-10.
It was the sixth win of Martin’s career, who went 3-6 during his rookie season in 2022. This was just his 22nd career start.
Martin generated some preseason hype after adding a kick changeup to his arsenal of pitches. He had an impressive spring, which included an immaculate inning against the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers when he struck out Shohei Ohtani looking.
He opened this season as Chicago's No. 3 starter and didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work against the Los Angeles Angels in his first start, but the White Sox still lost.
Martin took a step back in his second game, allowing seven runs against the Detroit Tigers, but he shut down one of MLB’s best offenses Friday.
As a senior at San Angelo Central in 2015, Martin led the Bobcats to the regional quarterfinals for the first time in program history. He went 9-1 with a 0.29 ERA and 116 strikeouts.
He was also a standout linebacker for the football team.
Martin played his college ball at Texas Tech University and earned Freshman All-American honors while helping the Red Raiders reach the College World Series in 2016.
He joins David Hulse and Trey Lunsford as the only former Central players to reach the majors.
Martin will make his next start Thursday against the Athletics.
