SANTO DOMINGO, D.R. — Former Houston Astros relief pitcher Octavio Dotel is among those who died after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic early Tuesday.
At least 44 people died and 160 others were injured when the roof collapsed at the one-story Jet Set nightclub in the capital city of Santo Domingo.
Dotel, 51, pitched for Houston for parts of five seasons from 2000 to 2004 before he was included in the trade that brought Carlos Beltran to the Astros. He played for 13 teams in his MLB career, but more than half of his innings pitched were with the Astros.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the Dominican province of Montecristi and sister of former Texas Rangers’ All-Star Nelson Cruz, was also among those who were killed.
Politicians, athletes and others were attending a concert at the iconic nightclub late Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday.
One of the members of the band who was performing was killed. The band’s singer, Rubby Perez, was injured, along with a legislator, Bray Vargas.
