WALL, TX — Wall High School’s athletes put on a show at their home track meet Wednesday as they ran away with both team titles at the Cotton Patch Relays.
Briggs Jones had five first-place finishes to lead the Hawks to 200 points, which was 80 more than the runner-up.
Jones showed his blazing speed by winning the 100-meter dash in 10.59 seconds. He was more than a half-second ahead of the field.
He added wins in the 200 (22.54), long jump (23-04.75), triple jump (47-01.5), and the 4x200 relay (1:28.23).
Other highlights for the Hawks included Slayton Hallmark winning the 110 hurdles and taking second in the 300 hurdles, while Reid Robertson won the 400.
Wall also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Wall sophomore Jager Thompson had a strong day by taking second in the long jump, second in the 100 and third in the high jump.
“Speed kills, and we have a very strong track team right now,” Wall head coach Craig Slaughter said. “I can’t say enough good things about the boys and the times.”
San Angelo Central, which finished fourth in the team standings with 75.5 points, had two athletes walk away with titles.
Cameron Hash won the 3200 and was second in the 1600, while Tu’Uta Kalamafoni claimed the discus title with a throw of 150 feet, 3 inches, nearly seven feet farther than anyone else.
On the girls’ side, Wall scored 170 points to outpace runner-up Jim Ned by 44 points.
The Lady Hawks won all three relays and had individual titles from Lexi Slaughter in the 400 and Abbie Boehle in the long jump.
San Angelo Central’s Sydney Crooks had an outstanding day in her jumping events, winning the high jump and earning runner-up finishes in the long jump and triple jump.
Central also had wins from Naomi Bageant in the 300 hurdles and Hanna Zwiebel in the 800.
Zwiebel won by nearly seven seconds in a time of 2:21.65.
“If no (college) offers her in the state of Texas, I don’t know what they’re looking at,” Central head coach Roy Garcia said.
Lake View’s Analycia Vasquez won the title in the 100 in a time of 12.63 seconds. She was also fifth in the long jump.
Other highlights from area athletes included Ballinger’s Ashtyn Wilson winning the 100 hurdles and Matilda Galvan winning the triple jump.
