AUSTIN, TX – Dr. Jamey Harrison has been named Executive Director of the University Interscholastic League. His appointment will take effect on April 1, 2025.
Harrison will become the eighth executive director in UIL history. He will replace Dr. Charles Breithaupt, who has served in the role since 2009.
Dr. Harrison has served as Deputy Executive Director of UIL since 2011, playing a key role in the league’s efforts to provide high-quality, educational extracurricular academic, athletic and music contests for Texas students. In this role, he has overseen all UIL departments, led governmental relations efforts and supervised rulemaking and adjudication processes.
During his tenure at UIL, Dr. Harrison has spearheaded several major initiatives. He has overseen significant improvements to competitive equity, including the addition of a sixth conference and the recent implementation of Division I and Division II playoff brackets for all team sports. He has also played a pivotal role in advancing technology and mapping software to improve the reclassification and realignment alignment process. Additionally, Dr. Harrison has led UIL’s crisis response efforts to major weather events and, most notably, the organization’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue serving Texas students and schools through the UIL,” Harrison said. "The opportunities UIL provides go beyond competition— they shape character, unite communities and create lifelong memories. I look forward to building on this legacy while preserving what makes UIL great."
Before joining UIL, Dr. Harrison held the position of Superintendent of Schools for Bridge City ISD. His career in education includes experience as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, high school principal and deputy superintendent.
Beyond his duties at UIL, Dr. Harrison has served on several national committees for the National Federation of State High School Associations in recent years and is active in the community.
A graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High School, Dr. Harrison earned both his undergraduate and Master of Education degrees from Lamar University before completing his doctoral degree at The University of Texas at Austin.
