SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University women’s basketball team was not chosen for the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament during Sunday night’s selection show.
The Rambelles were ranked No. 8 in the most recent regional rankings, so they knew they were on the bubble for the eight-team regional tournament.
They seemed to bolster their case in the Lone Star Conference Tournament quarterfinals Thursday with a 71-61 win over Eastern New Mexico, which was chosen as a No. 5 seed for the regional tournament.
The Belles were knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals Saturday with a 71-58 loss to Texas Woman’s, the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
ASU’s position was probably secure as long as no upset winners emerged from other conference tournaments, but that’s exactly what happened.
The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, a No. 6 seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, improbably knocked out the top three seeds in the conference to steal an automatic bid into the tournament.
ASU’s season ended with a record of 18-12.
The regional tournament field will be comprised of No. 1 Texas Woman’s vs. No. 8 Adams State, No. 4 Colorado Mesa vs. No. 5 Eastern New Mexico, No. 2 Lubbock Christian vs. No. 7 UC-Colorado Springs, and No. 3 UT Tyler vs. No. 6 West Texas A&M.
