Could the Dallas Cowboys Draft a Potential Replacement for Dak Prescott?

SAN ANGELO, TX— Will the Dallas Cowboys address the quarterback position in the 2025 NFL Draft?

While the Philadelphia Eagles will square off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, the other 30 teams will be gearing up for the draft.

The Dallas Cowboys currently hold the following draft picks with projected compensatory picks:

  • 1st Round — 12th overall
  • 2nd Round — 44th overall
  • 3rd Round — 76th overall
  • 5th Round — 148th overall
  • 5th Round — 168th overall
  • 5th Round — 170th overall
  • 5th Round — 171st overall
  • 6th Round — 186th overall
  • 6th Round — 207th overall
  • 7th Round — 226th overall

With the compensatory picks, the Cowboys have 10 selections to make unless they trade around, something they have not done a lot of in recent drafts.

Quarterback might not be a position the Cowboys have to address, but they should look to the future as Dak Prescott is 31 years old and has dealt with several injuries. They also have Cooper Rush, Trey Lance, and Will Grier on the depth chart.

Dallas should be able to find a quarterback in the upcoming draft, sit him for a couple seasons, then decide if he should be the face of the franchise. This was the idea when they drafted Prescott in the fourth round, but an injury to Tony Romo forced him into the lineup.

The top quarterbacks in the upcoming draft look like Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward.

Sheduer Sanders- Colorado- 6’2” – 215 lbs. (1st Round)

Sanders had a good season for the Buffs, completing 75% of his passes, while throwing for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was a four-star prospect coming out of Trinity Christian High School and played for his father, Deion Sanders, at Jackson State and Colorado.

He projects as a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.

Cam Ward- Miami- 6’2” – 223 lbs. (1st Round)

Hot on his heels is Cam Ward out of Miami. Ward was the ACC Player of the Year, won the Davey O-Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback, was a consensus All- American, and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.

Ward started his college career at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State and then to Miami. He completed 67.2% of his passes in 2024, had 39 touchdowns and threw 7 interceptions.

Quarterbacks the Cowboys will more likely be able to draft in the earlier rounds are Syracuse’s Kyle McCord, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, Ohio State’s Will Howard, Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss, and Dillon Gabriel from Oregon.

Kyle McCord- Syracuse- 6’3” – 220 lbs. (2nd or 3rd Round)

McCord was initially a four-star prospect and was later elevated to a five-star. He started at Ohio State before transferring to Syracuse. McCord broke several single-season records and impressively threw for over 300 yards in 11 of 12 games this season. He threw for 4,779 yards, 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He is a player to watch when the draft rolls around, and expect his draft stock to rise through the combine and rest of the offseason.

Quinn Ewers- Texas – 6’2” – 210 lbs. (1st or 2nd Round)

Ewers played his high school ball at Southlake Carroll and was a top recruit entering his college career. He started off at Ohio State then transferred to Texas, where he dealt with the pressure of Arch Manning over his head. Ewers completed 65.8% of his passes, and threw for 3,472 yards with 31 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

Will Howard- Ohio State- 6’4”- 2335 lbs. (3rd or 4th Round)

Will Howard just beat Notre Dame in the CFP Playoffs Championship, where he was 17 of 21 for 231 yards and threw two interceptions. He did complete 73.1% of his passes in 2024, and threw for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Howard was mobile to a point, rushing for 105 yards and seven touchdowns.

Dillon Gabriel- Oregon- 6’- 200 lbs. (4th Round)

Like every other quarterback on this list, Gabriel transferred from his original school. He moved from UCF and Oklahoma until he settled at Oregon. He was a first-team All-American and the BIG 10’s MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Quarterback of the Year. He completed 326 of 447 attempts (72.9%), and threw for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Gabriel was injured at UCF in 2021 and only played in and started three games, but for the rest of his college career, Gabriel put up an average of 29.2 touchdowns per season.

Jaxson Dart- Ole Miss- 6’ 2”- 220 lbs.- (3rd Round)

Dart was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing both football and baseball. He transferred from USC to Ole Miss following the 2021 season. As a three-year starter, Dart threw for over 10,000 yards (4,279 in 2024), 72 touchdowns (29 in 2024), and 22 interceptions (6 in 2024).

In the Taxslayer Gator Bowl, Dart completed 27 of 35 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns.
