Cowboys Find New Head Coach in Familiar Face

DALLAS, TX— The Dallas Cowboys have found their next head coach.

Around 10:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, it was announced that the Dallas Cowboys had found their next head coach in offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. It didn’t take long to find him as he was already on staff, just not calling plays.

Schottenheimer has been an assistant coach, position coach, and a coordinator in both the NFL and college game. He has been on the Cowboys’ staff since 2022 when he was an analyst. The next season, he moved to offensive coordinator and was in that role until he was hired as head coach

In the NFL, Schottenheimer has coached for the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It is worth noting the Cowboys only interviewed a handful of candidates after former head coach Mike McCarthy and the team parted ways. As a matter of fact, you could count the interviews on one hand. The Cowboys interviewed Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh, and Leslie Fraizer.

For fans, this is depressing.

Fans should want Schottenheimer to be successful but after the offseason so far, many are let down. There really isn’t any other way to spin it but to ask, “What are the Cowboys doing?”.

They hired a coach who wasn’t on anyone else’s radar and didn’t even entertain some of the top names like Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn. A lot of fans want the culture to change, thinking the Cowboys need a new spark. Obviously, what they’ve been doing isn’t working.

It all falls on Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Instead of interviewing four or five times the number of coaches they did to lead the most expensive sports franchise in the world, the Cowboys hired from within and cause a lot of headlines along the way.

Remember when Deion Sanders was going to leave Colorado and come to the Cowboys? Or when former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was the guy? What about former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten?

All the while, Jerry and company have to watch the Washington Commanders take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game, something the Cowboys haven’t been a part of for 29 years.

Former Dallas Cowboy and Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman said earlier this offseason that he didn’t think the Cowboys job is a coveted position and it’s hard to argue with that point.

What has the Cowboys’ front office done the last few offseason to inspire confidence that they are really trying to get another Super Bowl?

The Cowboys haven’t been aggressive in free agency.

The Cowboys haven’t been aggressive in the NFL Draft.

The Cowboys haven’t been aggressive to get contracts with current players done.

The Cowboys haven’t been aggressive to inject new life into the team.

Jerry Jones has said that he would write an embarrassingly large check to get the Cowboys another Super Bowl. Last season, the Cowboys spent $18 million in free agency. They also took their sweet time getting CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott new contracts.

Stop talking about writing that check and write it.

Jerry also said that nobody can “GM” the Cowboys better than him and if he wants to get a deal done, he’ll get it done.

It’s all crazy to think about. If the Cowboys didn’t drag their feet getting two of their best players under contract, they could’ve used some of their freed-up salary cap space to sign, for example, a running back.

Running back was a position this past offseason that needed new blood and Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley were testing the waters. Henry ended up signing with the Baltimore Ravens and had 1,921 yards and 16 touchdowns. Barkley signed with the Eagles and had 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns.

After the Ravens visited the Cowboys and had 151 yards and two touchdowns, Jones said the Cowboys didn’t have the money to sign Henry.

(Note: Henry signed a 2-year, $16 million deal with the Ravens.)

(Double Note: Henry and Prescott share the same agent, Todd France.)

Is this really the legacy Jerry Jones wants to leave behind. Social media is laughing at the Cowboys. Fans are sick of it and while they shouldn’t listen to fans, they are the ones that spend money and helped make the Cowboys a $10 billion franchise.

It feels like Schottenheimer is just another scapegoat. If they win, Jerry will take the credit and if they lose, they’ll move on and restart the process.

The Cowboys are set to hold a press conference on Monday, January 27, to introduce Schottenheimer as the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
