DALLAS, TX— The Dallas Cowboys could be close to hiring a new head coach.
This offseason for the Cowboys has been … something else. After the season, the Cowboys refused to allow the Chicago Bears to interview then-head coach Mike McCarthy, only to part ways with the Super Bowl winning coach a week after. Now, reports are coming in that the Cowboys are going to promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to lead the team.
Schottenheimer has been with the Cowboys since 2022, first as an offensive analyst then as the offensive coordinator after current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore left for San Diego.
He has bounced around the league as an offensive position coach and coordinator, coaching for St. Louis, Kansas City, Washington, San Diego, New York, Indianapolis, Seattle, and Jacksonville. Schottenheimer has also been a position coach for USC, Georgia, and Syracuse. He has never been an NFL head coach.
The Cowboys completed four interviews with potential head coaches in Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh, Leslie Fraizer, and Schottenheimer. Dallas actually had two interviews with their offensive coordinator as late as Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Dallas did not interview either Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn, two of the names at the top of a lot of potential head coaching lists.
In the end, Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones really doesn’t have anyone else to blame but himself should, and when, fans lose confidence, if they haven’t already, in this Cowboys team.
On top of that, fans, as well as the front office, get to watch as former Cowboy coaches, Moore and Dan Quinn, are coaching their respective teams in the NFC Championship game. Quinn is the current head coach of the Washington Commanders, and Moore is the Eagles offensive coordinator.
Both of those teams helped their rosters in free agency. Philadelphia added 2024’s rushing leader Saquon Barkley last offseason and the Commanders added former Cowboys in Dorance Armstrong and Tyler Biadasz. The big thing that helped the Commanders was drafting LSU’s Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
It has been 29 years since the Cowboys have been to the NFC Championship Game. In 2018, Jerry said that he would write an embarrassingly large check to win another Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Cowboys spent $18 million in free agency last season, the lowest amount in the NFL.
How does anyone have any confidence in the Cowboys heading into this free agency period and draft?
If Schottenheimer does become the next head coach, he could work out. But it doesn’t feel like Jerry, and by extension his son, Stephen, actually care about winning, after the last couple of seasons. This doesn’t excite the fanbase, and it just shows more and more that the Joneses are in control and they don’t care what anyone else thinks.
Maybe Jerry should make more appearances on “Landman."
