ABILENE, TX — After leading Abilene Christian University to a historic football season, quarterback Maverick McIvor announced Thursday he is entering the transfer portal.
McIvor, a former star at San Angelo Central, led ACU to its first-ever conference championship at the NCAA Division I FCS level.
The Wildcats’ season ended last week in the second round of the playoffs to North Dakota State.
McIvor was leading the nation in passing before he was injured in ACU’s regular-season finale. He was able to return for the second-round playoff game.
McIvor finished with 3,828 passing yards and 30 touchdowns with seven interceptions while completing 63% of his passes.
He started the season with a bang when he threw for 506 yards in an overtime loss to Texas Tech, the school he originally signed with out of Central.
McIvor received more than 20 offers from NCAA Division I schools — including USC and Ole Miss — after a breakout junior season at Central, in which he threw for 3,415 yards and 43 TDs, while rushing for 870 yards in 12 games.
McIvor suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of his senior season at Central in 2018. He was then injured in a preseason practice at Texas Tech and never saw game action.
McIvor finally returned to the field in 2022 after transferring to ACU. He has one final year of eligibility remaining.
"Prepared harder than anyone. Led the team in the right way. CHAMPION. Nothing but respect for all Mav has done here! Somebody is getting a stud," ACU assistant coach Matt Giampa posted on X after McIvor's announcement.
