LAS VEGAS, NV — San Angelo will be represented by three cowboys this week at the National Finals Rodeo.
Brothers Ty and Joel Harris, along with Dylan Hancock, will compete in tie-down roping during the 10-day competition that begins Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
They qualified by finishing in the top 15 in season earnings on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association tour.
Ty is in third place in the world standings with $219,172.35 and poised for his best finish yet.
This is the 26-year-old cowboy’s sixth NFR trip, but he’s never finished better than ninth place.
He’s only about $2,100 behind Montana cowboy Haven Meged in second place. Shad Mayfield, from Clovis, New Mexico, is way out in front, however, with a more than $60,000 lead.
Hancock, who was the Rookie of the Year last season in tie-down roping and the all-around, is headed to his first NFR.
The 20-year-old is in ninth place with $134,896.22.
Joel Harris is also making his first NFR appearance. The 22-year-old is in his third year on the tour.
He’s in 13th place with $116.809.91.
Champions will be crowned in seven events — bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding — and there will be an all-around winner.
The finals will begin at 7:45 p.m. Thursday on the Cowboy Channel.
